When I was nineteen years old I left Canada for Europe flying into Lisbon overnight. Immediately the old, intimate world of Europe appealed to me, I vowed never to live in North America again, and I never did. I studied painting in St Ives, Cornwall where I met Tony, the person I was to marry. I travelled and worked with my Tony in Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, St. Lucia in the Caribbean, Lanzarote, the Bahamas and Ireland.
I've always been interested in the colours associated with a place, the black lava fields of Lanzarote, the shifting seas and skies of Cornwall, constantly changing from aquamarine to stormy black, the soft, muted palette of Ireland particularly in the West, with a silver light with a sparkle in it and the bright lush colours of the tropical Bahamas.
Pure line has always been important to me and colour is a very strong part of my work. The design of the jugs, flowers and vases and the shapes and personality that I see in them are often set against a window reflecting their surroundings.
The paintings here in Joan Clancy Gallery are mainly from Lanzarote where I paint every year. The oil paintings began from sketch book drawings to be worked on in the studio, the works done in situ are more spontaneous and of the moment. Some are densely painted with intense colour detail, others more ethereal.
This work covers the years 1995-2012 chosen to reflect the importance of both line and colour in my work, an importance that began in my earliest work as a child in Canada.
