Local & Internationally Acclaimed Artists In Gaeltacht Art Gallery

Honouring the centenary of the John Betjeman's birth.

27th June 2007

The Greta Hellstrom - John Betjeman Tribute is probably the finest group show ever exhibited in Joan Clancy Gallery in the Ring Gaeltacht. With new works by Maderson, Cullinan, Rayleen Clancy, Andrea Jameson, Blawnin Clancy, O'Mullane, Sinéad Ní Chionaola and others, it is a joy to experience the power and intensity of the local land and seascapes depicted by some of these artists.

Maderson's riot of colour and masterful technique in Figures Against Light is alive with energy and action. Katarzina Gajewska one of the foremost Polish artists in Ireland today has some stunning homages to Betjeman, and Michael Mulcahy's The Search for Mystery No. 6 has refinement and discipline.

Eileen Healy's strong figurative work is confident and sophisticated, while Blawnin Clancy's Low Tide Cunnigar Beach and Steps of the Comeraghs are serene with fine brush strokes. Rayleen Clancy's land and seascapes have taken a new direction: Helvick Cove, Sunrise captures the mesmerising effect of the dawn light on the water and the landscape, allowing the viewer to be part of that magic and majestic experience.

John Cullinan is at his best, and Aspect of Helvick and Moored in Helvick are strong with playful curves and masterful composition.

Gretta Hellstrom - John Betjeman is a group show to mark the centenary of the birth of the late poet laureate Sir John Betjeman who used to visit the Yellow House (a fishing lodge then owned by the Villiers-Stuarts) on Helvick Head at the tip of the Ring peninsula in the County Waterford Gaeltacht where Joan Clancy Gallery is situated. His poem The Irish Unionist's Farewell to Greta Hellstrom in 1922 has the refrain "...Dungarvan in the rain" at the end of each stanza, and Greta the object of the poet's affections has remained a mystery to many.

The artists participating in Greta Hellstrom - John Betjeman Tribute are Arthur Maderson, Blawnin Clancy, Sinéad Ní Chionaola, Rayleen Clancy, Michael Mulcahy, Andrea Jameson, Olive Watkins, Wishy Martin, Suzy O'Mullane, Rita O'Connell, Katarzyna Gajewska, John Cullinan, Eileen Healy.

Located between Coláiste na Rinne (the Irish Language College) and the Cunnigar Beach, Greta Hellstrom - John Betjeman Tribute is running in Joan Clancy Gallery until Monday July 16th 2007. The gallery is open from 11 to 5pm each day. Well signposted.
