Martin Quigley Suaimhneas Exhibition
Press Release November 2002
Suaimhneas a collection of new paintings by Martin Quigley was opened in Joan Clancy Gallery by Donald Brady, County Librarian, Waterford Co Council on Friday night November 15th. In his address he said "I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to perform the launch of this splendid exhibition. This is my first visit to Danlann Shiobhan Ui Fhlannachadha in the Ring Gaeltacht. It is a beautiful and significant development in an outstanding and evocative landscape. My knowledge of the Clancy family is largely based on their musical heritage and the artistic output of Rayleen and Blawnin. This new Gallery serves as a tremendous additional outlet for the promotion and development of the arts in Waterford and serves as a signpost for the creativity and singleness of this unique and special part of the County.
"Joan and her family deserve enormous praise and credit for their wide ranging involvement in and promotion of the arts of the County and I am pleased to add my voice to those lending recognition to their efforts.
"Martin Quigley has been a friend for over 20 years. Before commenting on his work I would like to say that he is one of those special people who has followed an irregular and unconventional path, characteristics that are I believe reflected in his work. What is particularly noteworthy is that he has managed to maintain a powerful link between his teaching and communication of the arts with the creativity of the practicing artist. I have no doubt that his work as a member of the teaching staff of WIT, is both illuminating and humorous. His range of exhibitions and the penetration of his work are truly international.
"This current exhibition marks a significant development in the progress of Martin's work. It is my very great pleasure to declare this excellent exhibition open and I hope that many of the works we see tonight will rapidly find their way into Santa's sack."
